The Last Of Us Season 2 kicked off where the previous season ended. We see Ellie asking Joel, ‘ Swear to me that everything you said about Fireflies is true .’ To which Joel replies, ‘ I swear .’ That’s the last time Ellie sought an answer from him, as following that scene, the girl grew cold toward the one she trusted the most.
Five years have passed since Joel killed the Fireflies and brought Ellie back to Jackson, Wyoming. Ellie is now a 19-year-old teenager and has discovered that Joel kept her in the dark for all those years. In the TLOU Part 2 video game, she gets acquainted with the truth through a flashback.
Ellie had been immune to the Cordyceps infection since birth, and her immunity could have saved humanity only if Joel had let the surgery happen in the final episode of TLOU Season 2 Episode 9 (or the final moments of the original game).
We totally get why Joel interfered, but we can’t deny that he pushed humanity into darkness by killing the surgeon ( Abby’s father ) who could make the cure using Ellie’s immunity. So, basically, after realizing that Joel didn’t give her the chance to save humanity, Ellie begins to feel guilty for being alive .
Ellie started looking up to Joel when he fought against all odds to keep her alive in Season 1. That’s why she also got angry when Joel decided to pass on her responsibilities to Tommy in TLOU Season 1 Episode 6. However, the events that took place at the end of the pilot season were a turning point in their lives, as Ellie starts feeling betrayed by the one she trusted the most in the entire world.
