Ser Duncan the Tall was an orphan who initially lived in the slums of King’s Landing. Not familiar with either of his parents, he believed his father was a criminal. He used to sell pieces of meat to the local shops for a bowl of brown most days. However, things changed for him when, one day, a hedge knight named Ser Arlan of Pennytree picked Dunk as his squire.
He was only five or six years old when this humble knight entered his life, changing the entire picture for him. The knightly duo traveled to different parts of Westeros for tournaments, except the North. Arlan also taught Duncan swordsmanship, and since the day the boy held a sword for the first time, he couldn’t stop dreaming of becoming a knight of the Kingsguard.
In 209 AC, while traveling to the tournament at Ashford, Ser Arlan passed away. Instead of giving up, Dunk decided to participate in the tourney in his master’s place. On the way, he met a shaved-head boy who desperately showed interest in becoming Dunk’s squire. Initially, he refused to take the boy as his squire, but when the boy made him believe that he was an orphan, Dunk agreed.
Egg was actually revealed to be Aegon V Targaryen, who, after becoming king, was named Aegon the Unlikely. He appointed Ser Duncan as the Knight of the Kingsguard initially and promoted him as Lord Commander with time. From their first meeting until their tragic deaths at Summerhall, the duo stood for each other, no matter how many challenges life threw at them.
