What Food Do Axolotls Prefer

Axolotls have a very specific food preference in Minecraft, and they will only eat live tropical fish. Unlike the cats that feel contented with raw salmon or cod, you must catch the tropical fish in a bucket and then feed them to the Axolotl to satisfy its hunger.

Tropical fish usually spawn in groups in the lukewarm or warm ocean biomes, mangrove swamps, and even inside the Lush Caves as well. Once you spot a group, equip your iron bucket and right-click on the fish to catch them. Alternatively, you can buy a bucket of Tropical fish from the Wandering Traders for just 3 Emeralds.

Do note that any regular tropical fish caught while fishing or by killing them using a weapon are not considered alive, and the Axolotl won’t feed on them. Hence, you’ll require a proper fish in a bucket to feed them.

How to Feed Axolotls in Minecraft

The first step is to get the buckets made using 3 iron ingots in the game. Once you have them, head to any biome with an abundance of Tropical fish and catch them in your bucket. Now, you may follow the given steps below to feed an Axolotl in Minecraft:

Head inside the lush caves and look out for the Axolotls spawning inside the pools of water blocks beside the clay.
Now, equip the bucket of Tropical fish in your hand and move close to the mob, such that you get its attention.

What is the Use of Feeding Axolotls

Axolotls are a great utility mob when it comes to exploring the underwater biomes in Minecraft. So, feeding them Tropical fish becomes really necessary as it can help tame and breed the Axolotls , boost the growth rate of a baby Axolotl, and even help lead them in a certain direction.

When you feed two adult Axolotls live Tropical fish, they enter a love mode with red hearts appearing on top of their heads. This leads to producing a tiny baby Axolotl out of those two. This way, you can create an army of these mobs and raid the Ocean Monuments .

Moreover, if you would like to keep these mobs as a pet, simply hold the bucket of fish and walk slowly towards your base to lead them there. Otherwise, use a simple leash to bring them to your base.

Finally, while raiding Ocean Monuments, don’t forget to carry these tiny helpful mobs with you because they can attack the hostile aquatic mobs like the Drowned, Guardian, and Elder Guardian. Moreover, if you’re able to kill a mob while an Axolotl is in a battle with it, you get a passive Mining Fatigue and Regeneration effect as well. Axolotls can be fed and led in a certain direction using a bucket of tropical fish. However, these creatures won’t follow you like the dogs or cats in the overworld.

Two adult axolotls can be bred in Minecraft by feeding both of them buckets of tropical fishes. A little while later, two axolotls will be in love mode, and a baby axolotl will spawn.

Axolotls won’t despawn if a player has named it or if they’re in a bucket.

The blue axolotl is the rarest one in the game, and it has a 1/1200 chance of spawning in the game.

The Spears can be crafted using two sticks and ingots made from any of these materials: Iron, Gold, or Diamond.

The combat in Minecraft is going to become even more chaotic and exciting with the next update later this year. The final drop of 2025 is going to be called Mounts of Mayhem, as announced in the Minecraft Live September 2025 livestream, and it is packed with some epic features. One of the key highlights is the brand-new tier weapon – the Spear, while the other is the Nautilus mob .

Spear Introduces Mounted Combat in Minecraft

The Spear is not going to be just another melee weapon in Minecraft. Unlike the swords and axes, this one’s not easy to handle. As you wield it longer, it begins to feel heavier with time, reducing its effectiveness for a brief period.

Crafting a spear requires only two sticks and an ingot – Iron, Gold, or even Diamond. Coming to its combat mechanics, the Spear has two attack modes – a short, close-range Jab and a Charge attack. The Charge attack works similarly to a Mace , and the damage done increases with your speed.

Attacking with a Spear in Minecraft while riding a mount goes through three states:

Lowered or Idle state is when it can deal damage, knockback enemies, and dismount them from their mount as well.
Once the Spear starts to shake, you can deal damage and knockback enemies, but not dismount them.
Finally, once the spear starts to fall, it can only deal damage and no longer cause knockback or dismount enemies.

The Spear of each tier affects how quickly it begins to fall. The diamond Spear, being the heaviest, drops the fastest, but can deliver the heaviest blows to the enemies. Whereas the Iron and Gold versions are lighter but inflict less damage.

The Mounts of Mayhem update in Minecraft is all about the diversity in combat. With the addition of the Spear, players can now perform Jousting on any mount. Whether you’re thinking of Horse Jousting on the ground, using Happy Ghasts to take this battle to the skies, or diving underwater and using the new mobs, Nautilus, to battle each other, anything is possible.
