- During the IOI 2025 Showcase, we got a fresh look at some MindsEye gameplay.
- The presentation did little to assuage my many doubts surrounding the game, especially when it comes to its bland gameplay and glaring lack of personality.
- MindsEye will arrive on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on June 10.
MindsEye, which comes out on June 10, just received a comprehensive gameplay overview during the IOI Showcase. Developed by Build a Rocket Boy with Leslie Benzies at the helm, we got a lengthy look at the title’s combat, UI, driving mechanics, and open world. The showcase will certainly help dispel rumors about the game being some sort of elaborate ruse, but it definitely won’t elevate its stock.
MindsEye, in a nutshell, borrows GTA’s third-person, over-the-shoulder combat, pairs it with the hacking mechanics of Watch Dogs, and sprinkles Cyberpunk 2077’s core premise on top for a generic amalgamation of AAA tropes devoid of personality . The various firearms tucked within its GTA-style weapon wheel have a distinct lack of heft behind them, making for a combat loop that is the very definition of cookie-cutter.
Its vehicles feature flashy exteriors but have that unmistakable ‘ floatiness ‘ last seen in Watch Dogs 2. Its open-world playground is shiny on the surface level but visibly hollow upon further inspection.
Even after countless viewings of its pre-release footage, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to nail down the game’s vibe. Is it Cyberpunk-GTA? A dystopian third-person shooter? Or simply a linear action game?
Perhaps I’m being too harsh, so I’d encourage you to check out the gameplay yourself. That said, it’s hard to imagine the game being a rave success, especially when you consider that Build a Rocket Boy’s CFO and Chief Legal Officer resigned just a week before its launch. Talk about a bad omen.
