- Team Cherry’s marketing director confirmed Hollow Knight: Silksong is still in development after fans speculated about a developer’s cake photo.
- The cake photo and cryptic message had no connection to the game or Nintendo Switch 2, despite fan theories.
- Silksong is being developed by a three-person team with no announced release date.
The long wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong continues, but at least we know it’s still being made. Matthew Griffin , who handles marketing at Team Cherry, confirmed this week that the game is “real, progressing, and will release.” This update comes after fans got excited about a picture of chocolate cake, of all things.
The Great Cake Conspiracy of 2025
The latest chapter in Silksong’s development saga began when William Pellen, co-director at Team Cherry, changed his social media profile picture to a slice of chocolate cake and posted a cryptic message earlier in January stating “ something big is coming, keep your eyes closed tomorrow. ” This coincided with Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement, sending the Hollow Knight community into detective mode.
Eager fans discovered that the cake image originated from a recipe published on April 2, 2024 – exactly one year before Nintendo’s planned Switch 2 showcase event in 2025. This led to widespread speculation about Silksong’s potential appearance at the upcoming Nintendo event.
However, Matthew Griffin, Team Cherry’s Marketing and PR director known as “Leth,” stepped in to clarify the situation. After privately reaching out to popular Hollow Knight content creator Fireb0rn, Griffin confirmed that the cake photo held no deeper meaning and wasn’t part of any alternate reality game (ARG).
Griffin later tweeted to address mounting concerns about the game’s status: “ Yes, the game is real, progressing, and will release .” This situation highlights the passionate dedication of the Hollow Knight community, which has been waiting for Silksong since its announcement in 2019.
The three-person development team has maintained relatively quiet about the game’s progress, leading to increased speculation each year.
Despite rumors connecting Silksong to the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup, no official confirmation exists regarding platform releases beyond the originally announced platforms.
