One of the standout features of Gemini Nano on Google Pixel is Scam detection. It’s a feature where the AI model detects for any cues inside a call that could be a potential scam. Google unveiled it back in Google I/O 2024, and it rolled out to the Pixel phones as part of the March Pixel drop . However, it looks like the Scam Detection feature is now rolling out to Google Pixel Watch 2 and 3.

In a new support page that was published recently, Google has acknowledged the availability of Scam Detection on Pixel Watches. The feature is rolling out to Pixel Watch 2 and 3 starting today, and you can start using Scam Detection, if you have a Pixel 9. It’s also worth mentioning that Scam Detection on Pixel Watches is only available in the US and in English language.

Since Pixel Watches don’t boast the hardware capable of running the models onboard. So, you need to be connected to your Pixel phone to use the feature. This is regardless of if you have an LTE or WI-Fi-only variant.

That said, it’s a bummer that the feature availability doesn’t start with Pixel 8 considering it also supports Gemini Nano’s Scam Detection. We hope Google expands the support soon.

To ensure the feature is working, all you need to do is open the Phone app and head over to Settings > Scam Detection . All you need to do is turn on Scam Detection and the feature should start working on your watch. To know if it’s actually working, you should hear an audible beep at the start and every few minutes.

Google also recently rolled out a hotfix update for Pixel Watch 2 and 3, fixing Notification delays and random restarts. Besides, there also seems to be a mysterious Gemini icon appearing during calls, suggesting Pixel Watches could soon get Gemini and/or more AI capabilities.

Google Pixel phone with lock screen on and fingerprint icon - 3
  • Android 16 DP2 on Pixel 9 adds a new Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock option.
  • When enabled, it allows users to unlock their devices even when the screen is completely off.
  • This should be a useful feature for those who don’t want to use AOD because of battery woes but want the Fingerprint to always be active.

Pixel 9 series was the first set of Pixel devices to get ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for faster unlock and better accuracy. However, like on most phones, users need to wake up the screen before they can use their finger to unlock the device unless the always-on display is enabled. Well, that’s changing with the Pixel 9 series as Google has added an option to unlock using their Pixel 9’s fingerprint sensor even when the screen is off.

In the Android 16 Developer Preview 2 that Google rolled out today, there’s a new Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock toggle on the Fingerprint Unlock page with the description “Use Fingerprint Unlock even when the screen is off”.

As the name suggests, this keeps the Fingerprint sensor active even when the screen is completely off. Users can then roughly predict where the fingerprint scanner is, and place and scan their registered finger to easily unlock the device without waking the screen up first.

Unfortunately, this only seems to work with the Pixel 9 ( review ) series and will probably be exclusive to the series because it sports an Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor. However, users with older Pixel devices can still unlock when the screen is off (technically) by enabling the Always-on display from Settings > Display > Lock screen > Always show time and info . Mind you, Always-on affects battery life.

The Screen-off fingerprint unlock is definitely a great feature for those who don’t use AOD but still want to unlock the device without tapping and waking it up, especially when it’s lying flat on a table.

Trying out screen off fingerprint unlock feature on Pixel 6 - 5
  • Android 16 Beta 3 enables Screen-off Fingerprint unlock on older Google Pixels.
  • The feature was previously believed to be exclusive to Pixel 9 series.
  • With this, you can now unlock your Pixel phone quickly without AOD and turning on the display.

The next version of Android has reached its final testing phase with the recent Android 16 Beta 3 update. This beta didn’t bring any major upgrades but added many improvements for existing features. Among them, is the screen-off fingerprint feature, which is now available on older Google Pixel phones.

The Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock option in the Fingerprint Unlock settings menu allows users to unlock their Google Pixel phone with the screen off. This means, unlike previously where users had to tap to wake up the screen and then use the fingerprint to unlock, they can now just press on the fingerprint sensor region to unlock the phone.

To enable this feature on Android 16, go to Settings > Security and privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint Unlock , and turn on the Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock toggle under “When using Fingerprint Unlock”. To test it out, ensure Always-on Display is off. Turn off your phone’s screen and press any of your registered fingers in the sensor area. If this is active, your Pixel should automatically wake up and unlock.

For those unaware, Pixel 9 ( review ) series was the first to receive this feature with Android 16 DP 2 . We initially thought the feature would be Pixel 9-exclusive because of its ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. However, the feature is now available on Pixel 6 and newer models, which is a pleasant surprise.

Those who have Always-on display feature enabled can now disable it to save battery life. Instead, they can enable the Screen-off Fingerprint unlock feature for faster fingerprint unlock.
